The “Azerbaijan Journal of Physiology” issued by the Azerbaijan Society of Physiologists and Academician Abdulla Garayev Institute of Physiology is a peer-reviewed journal that publishes reviews and research articles on the results of scientific research in all branches of human and animal physiology and related sciences – biochemistry, biophysics, molecular biology, pharmacology, biomedicine, etc.

The journal is the successor and continuation of the former journals known as "Azərbaycan fiziologiya jurnalı" from 2019 to 2022 (ISSN 2707-9694), "Fiziologiya və biokimyanın problemləri" from 2003 to 2018 (ISSN 2948-0450), and "Trudy Instituta fiziologii" from 1956 to 2000 (ISSN 0376-1509) which 37 volumes were published since the date of establishment in 1956.

The current journal's title was registered by the Ministry of Justice of the Republic of Azerbaijan No 4259 decision of September 25, 2019.
